🔪 How to Make Tzatziki Sauce
Grate your cucumber using a box grater.
Squeeze all of the water out using cheese cloth or paper towels. You really want to get as much of the moisture out as possible, otherwise it can make your sauce watery.
Add the cucumber to a mixing bowl, then add in the remaining ingredients.
Mix until well combined.
Cover and allow it to chill in the fridge for at least 1 hour. This will allow the flavors to meld.
💡 Tips for Making Tzatziki
- Use Greek yogurt for its thick and creamy texture, which is key to get that rich, tangy flavor.
- Grate the cucumber finely to ensure it blends well and enhances the sauce's texture without overpowering it.
- Let the sauce sit in the fridge for at least an hour before serving to allow the flavors to develop fully.
- Use finely grated garlic to ensure it smoothly blends with the other ingredients.
- Wait to add more salt until it has had time to chill in the fridge because the flavors will develop more the longer it sits. This prevents you from over seasoning it.
☑️ Storage Instructions
Fridge: Store Tzatziki Sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. Stir well before serving leftovers.
Freezer: Tzatziki Sauce is not recommended for freezing because it can change in texture and consistency when thawed due to the yogurt and cucumber. It's best enjoyed fresh.
🍴 What to Serve with Greek Tzatziki Sauce
- Serve with grilled meats like chicken, lamb, or beef.
- Use as a dip for crudité trays with carrots, cucumbers, bell peppers, pita wedges or these pita chips.
- Drizzle over gyros or souvlaki wraps.
- Enjoy as a dressing for Greek salads or grain bowls.
- Use as a topping for baked potatoes or as a spread for sandwiches and wraps.
🔄 Substitutions and Additions
- Herbs: Use dried dill instead of fresh dill if fresh is unavailable.
- Vinegar: Lemon juice can be replaced with white vinegar or apple cider vinegar for a tangy twist.
- Garlic: Replace garlic cloves with garlic powder if fresh garlic is not on hand.
- Veggie add-ins: Add grated carrot or radish for additional crunch and flavor.
- Spice: Add a pinch of smoked paprika or cayenne pepper for a spicy kick.
- Sweetness: Add a dash of honey for a touch of sweetness.
Is Tzatziki Healthy?
Tzatziki Sauce should typically be considered healthy because it's made with Greek yogurt, which is rich in probiotics and protein. It's low in calories and can be a nutritious addition to meals.
What's the Difference Between Raita and Tzatziki?
Raita is made with regular yogurt while tzatziki is made using Greek yogurt. Tzatziki has a dip-like thick texture, while raita is thinner in consistency.
How Can I Thin Out the Consistency of Tzatziki?
You can thin out tzatziki sauce by stirring in a little bit of water, lemon juice, or olive oil until you reach your desired consistency.
What Can I Do If My Tzatziki is Too Runny?
If Tzatziki Sauce becomes too watery, add more yogurt or strain the mixture through a fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth to remove excess moisture.

I find that if I salt the grated cucumber and let drain for an hour before mixing with the rest of the ingredients my Tzatziki does not get watery. I like the sauce thick to stick to my kofta. Great recipe and very flavorful. Thank you for sharing.
