🔄 Substitutions and Additions
- Protein options: Feel free to use ground chicken, turkey or ground beef instead of pork. You can throw in mini shrimp at the very end of cooking for added protein. Tofu can also be used in place of the pork.
- Other veggies: Add other vegetables like bell peppers, mushrooms, baby bok choy or bean sprouts.
- Seasonings: Chinese five-spice powder adds a nice punch of flavor. You can also add a drop or two of oyster sauce or hoisin sauce for bolder Asian flavors. For an extra kick, sprinkle a pinch red pepper flakes into the broth.
- Garnishes: Though not low carb, you can sprinkle crispy chow mein noodles on top adds extra crunch. Fresh cilantro and lime wedges make flavorful garnishes.
Can I Make This Recipe in a Slow Cooker?
While the recipe is for a stovetop version, you make it in your slow cooker. Just brown the pork and sauté the ginger and garlic in a pan, then transfer everything to the slow cooker along with the remaining ingredients. Cook on low for 6-8 hours or on high for 3-4 hours.
Can I Use Pre-Shedded Cabbage?
Yes, you can use pre-shredded cabbage to save time. Just keep in mind you won't have any control over the size of the cabbage slices.
How Can I Make the Broth Creamier?
If you prefer a creamy both, you can add some coconut milk. Towards the end of cooking and once the cabbage and carrots are tender, stir in ½ to 1 cup of full-fat coconut milk.
Is Egg Roll Soup Considered Low Carb?
It absolutely is. In fact, for one serving, there are only 5 net carbs, most of which are naturally found in the cabbage.
