🔪 How to Make Crispy Home Fries
Preheat your air fryer for 5 minutes.
Wash, dry, and chop your potatoes into small pieces; cut them into quarters. If you’re using larger potatoes, make sure they are cut into ½-inch pieces.
After cutting them, dry them really well with paper towels, then place them in a mixing bowl.
Pour the olive oil, garlic salt, onion powder, smoked paprika, and ground black pepper over the top.
Mix until well combined, and each piece of potato is well coated in the olive oil and spices.
Pour half the batch into the basket of your air fryer that’s been sprayed with olive oil. I had to do mine in two batches, but you might not have to, depending on the size of your air fryer.
Air fry at 400°F for 15–17 minutes, or until the edges are crispy and they are cooked through. Be sure to shake the basket about 3 times while they are cooking.
Serve warm and enjoy!
💡 Tips for Making The Best Air Fryer Home Fries
- Dry them well: After chopping the potatoes, ensure you dry them well with paper towels. Excess moisture can prevent them from crisping.
- Uniform size: Cut the potatoes into uniform-sized pieces. This helps them cook evenly and in the same amount of time.
- Start with a preheated air fryer: Preheat your air fryer for a few minutes before adding the potatoes. You want the potatoes to immediately start cooking so they will get that golden-brown color.
- Shake, shake, shake: While air frying, make sure you shake the basket a few times during the cooking process so the fries will get nice and crispy on all sides.
- Adjust the time if needed: Depending on the model of the air fryer, you may have to adjust the cooking time. Keep an eye on the potatoes towards the end of the cooking time to check for doneness.
☑️ Storage Instructions
- Fridge: Allow the air-fried home fries to cool to room temperature before transferring them to an airtight container. You can store them in the refrigerator for up to 3–4 days.
- Freezer: If you plan to freeze the home fries, make sure you use a freezer-safe container or place them in a freezer bag.
- Reheating: For the best results, reheat the fries in the air fryer, oven, or toaster oven instead of the microwave to help them maintain crispiness.
🍴 What to Serve with Seasoned Home Fries
You can serve them with bacon and eggs for breakfast or with any of your favorite tasty dinner entrees. Here are some of my favorites:
- Steak: Of course, steak and potatoes go hand in hand. Try them with these Garlic Butter Steak Bites, this Cast-Iron Steak, and this Grilled Steak with Garlic Butter.
- Seafood: These potatoes go perfectly with these Air Fryer Frozen Shrimp, this Air Pest Salmon, Mediterranean Mahi Mahi, Baked Red Snapper, and Cod with Greek Salsa.
- Chicken: Serve those savory chicken dishes such as Chicken Florentine, Honey Garlic Chicken, and Slow Cooker Tuscan Chicken.
- Pork: Bone-in Pork Chops, Pork Tenderloin with Mushroom Gravy and these Shake and Bake Pork Chops are all excellent main course options with these potatoes.
🔄 Substitutions and Additions
- Peppers and onions: Air fryer breakfast potatoes with peppers and onions are amazing. Dice the onion and bell pepper into large chunks and let them cook with the potatoes.
- Cheese: Sprinkle shredded cheddar, Parmesan, or your favorite cheese over the home fries during the last few minutes of air-frying for a cheesy and gooey topping.
- Fresh herbs: Feel free to top the potatoes with chopped herbs like parsley, chives, or cilantro.
- Spices: Experiment with additional spices such as cayenne pepper, Cajun Seasoning, or dry Ranch Seasoning.
- Bacon bits: Sprinkle crispy bacon bits over the home fries for a smoky and savory flavor. Add them just before serving.
- Loaded home fries: Create loaded fries with toppings like diced tomatoes, green onions, and avocado. You can also top them with cheese, sour cream, and bacon bits.
- Buffalo style: Toss the air-fried home fries in this homemade Buffalo Sauce for a spicy and tangy twist.
Why Don't My Home Fries Get Crispy in the Air Fryer?
In order to get crispy home fries, follow the tips I listed above. Dry them, cut them evenly, and shake them. They will turn out perfect every time.
What Kind of Potatoes Make the Best Home Fries?
Starchy potatoes like russets or Yukon golds are better for home-frying because they tend to get crispier than other types of potatoes.
Can I Put a Raw Potato in an Air Fryer?
Sure! Some people like to parboil them first, but when they are cut into smaller cubes, they will be just fine without cooking beforehand.
Can I Make Home Fries with Canned Potatoes?
Technically, you can, though I do not prefer air-fried canned potatoes. The texture is much softer, and they do not have the same fresh flavor.
